Good morning! Our Jr. High Treble Choir attended the Region 2 Choral Assessment March 12th.
At this assessment, students are scored on a scale of 1-5 with 1 being Superior. I am so excited to share that our students scored straight IIRs, meaning that they received an Excellent rating, and were also only 3 points away from receiving a Superior rating!
This is the first time this group of students have attended assessment, so please help us congratulate them!

🌡️ Help Us Keep Students Healthy! 🤧
As we head into Spring Break, please review these guidelines on when to keep your child home from school.

According to the latest Viral Respiratory Diseases Report from the Arkansas Department of Health, public schools saw an average absenteeism rate of 8.2% last week. Following these guidelines helps keep our classrooms healthy and learning strong.

Informational poster from PCSSD titled “When Should I Keep My Child Home from School?” Lists symptoms and conditions that warrant keeping a child home, including fever, vomiting, persistent cough, sore throat, rash, pink eye, and contagious illnesses like flu or COVID-19. Also outlines criteria for returning to school, such as being symptom-free for 24 hours and feeling well enough to participate. Includes a reminder to notify the school of any contagious diagnoses and references page 52 of the PCSSD Student Handbook for more details. Poster features bold headings, icons, and a clean layout for clarity.

🔰 AVID Transition Day ☄️
Mills Middle School 8th‑grade AVID students spent the day exploring Wilbur D. Mills University Studies High School and learning what it means to be a future Comet. From the moment they arrived, they were welcomed by Principal Patterson and guided through a full experience of life on campus.

Students heard from Mrs. Radeanna Ausbrooks with the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, who shared insights on preparing for college and finding the right fit. Our counseling department and academies also provided valuable information on concurrent credit opportunities and the freshman academy experience.

Throughout the day, students toured the building, visited 9th‑grade classrooms, ate lunch on campus, and reflected on what high school will look like for them. It was a meaningful step in helping them feel confident and connected as they prepare for their next chapter.

"Learning is Required" at Mills Middle School. One way teachers meet the personalized academic needs of all scholars is through small group instruction. Intervention and/or extension is achieved during small group instruction which occurs throughout the week, every week, all year long.

Kudos to ELA teachers, Ms. Roberson and Ms. Vail's at their small group teacher stations and Mr. Boaitey's AVID classes in their tutorial groups facilitated by peer tutors. #learningisrequired #millsmiddleschoolcomets #thebestisyettocome

Kaley Holt secured 3rd place in last weekend's Central Arkansas Regional National History Day (NHD) Contest held at UA Little Rock. She advances to the State competition at UCA on April 18, 2026.

Ana Lopez and Marie Valdez earned an Honorable Mention for their group project.

Mills Middle School was the only PCSSD school to compete this year.

National History Day is a year-long research project where students act as real-life detectives. They analyze primary sources, draw complex conclusions, and present their findings in various formats like exhibits, documentaries, and websites.

Congratulations, Kaley Holt, Ana Lopez and Marie Valdez!
Congratulations also goes to Ms. Riordan for inspiring and shepherding her scholars to participate in this annual competition.

🎓 AVID Wednesday Spotlight: WICOR in Action! ✏️📚

The foundation of AVID techniques is the WICOR framework — Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading — and it was on full display at Sylvan Hills High School.

In Mrs. Bridges’ history class, students explored industrialization and its impact on countries worldwide. After reading about the topic in class, they dug deeper through research, organized their findings into visual models, collaborated on large‑scale posters, and used inquiry to understand how global events shaped the modern world.

👕 Don’t forget to wear your college or career shirt tomorrow and celebrate the strategies that help our scholars think critically and dream big.

It’s National School Breakfast Week, and you don't have to try green eggs and ham like Mrs. Neal's class. 🍳 Breakfast is FREE for every single student in PCSSD starting this school year!

According to the School Nutrition Association, students who eat breakfast are more likely to:
📈 Reach higher achievement levels in reading and math
📝 Score higher on standardized tests
🎯 Have better concentration and memory
🏃‍♂️ Maintain a healthy weight and stay alert

We are proud to fuel our students' minds and bodies! Way to go, Mrs. Neal and Sherwood Elementary, for this fun memory. #PCSSDProud #ServeAll #NationalSchoolBreakfastWeek #ReadAcrossAmerica

PCSSD is aware of the concerns being raised by Lifetouch. PCSSD had an agreement in place prior to all of this new information being released, and the process for providing all school photos had already begun. PCSSD is currently reviewing for potential changes with the agreement, and the district will be considering other options for the next school year.
