September is Attendance Awareness Month. Absenteeism is a lost opportunity to learn. We can’t afford to think of absenteeism as merely a lack of compliance with school rules. http://bit.ly/1oqfID7

GO BEARS!

Students in Ms. Tracy's 8th grade art class talked about careers in art last week. Together, the students worked on a collaborative installation piece. Each student had to design 1-2 tiles to build each letter to spell ARTIST. Love how this showcases how individuality can come together for something beautiful.

Mrs. Morris’s keyboarding classes worked on getting to know each other. Students decorated hexagons that were filled with some of their favorite things. Students then had to find a similarity in order to connect their hexagon to another one. Hands on activities like this really help the learning process!

Students in Ms. Shirley's 6th grade science class learned about Mae Jemison last week. Jemis was the first African American female astronaut and the first African American woman in space. After reading "Mae Among the Stars," students made rockets and had a competition to see who could shoot the farthest.

The Arkansas Department of Health is hosting a walk in vaccine clinic on Tuesday, August 30 at the Southwest Health Unit (8901 Dailey Drive, Little Rock) from 1-5 p.m. Appointments are not required. #pcssdproud #equityandexcellence

Students in Mrs West’s Algebra I and 8th grade math classes worked on using AVID WICOR strategies in class this week. Students worked in groups to stack cups using only a rubber band and four pieces of string. They also created a 5x5 grid of cards where each row and column had to add to equal 31. They also worked together to complete math stations that reviewed essential skills from last year. It’s going to be a great year of learning! Go Bears!

There was an internet outage in the central AR area today impacting our schools. Our internet partners, Ritter Communications, informed us that a fiber cable was cut downtown causing the outage. Most schools have restored connection. We aim to be fully restored for Monday school.

FOOTBALL FRIDAY: The first week of the high school football season is here! All 4 PCSSD high schools are playing today. If you can't make it to the games in person, we'll be live-streaming on YouTube (links: https://trst.in/LGVU12). Good luck! #pcssdproud #equityandexcellence

Students in Ms. Crites' math class had a scavenger hunt around the room this week. This was a creative way for the students to figure out and comprehend classroom procedures and where items are around the class. We love seeing how the students are getting acclimated to new classrooms.

Spotted: Mr. Hudgeons (principal at SYLVAN HILLS MIDDLE) talking on 2 phones at the same time while wearing a brace to heal a broken thumb and nearly 1000 people tour the school during open house. Is he the real Batman?

‘Twas the night before school starts
And all through the town
Not a teacher was sleeping
For excitement abound.
The students all nestled
Asleep in their beds.
Knowing this school year will bring
So much knowledge for their heads.
Our scholars already know
That we go the distance
To insure we provide
Equity and Excellence!
