SHERWOOD, Ark -- Congratulations to Sylvan Hills Elementary School Counselor Susan Whatley for being named the Arkansas School Counselor Association Counselor of the Year!

In January 2021, Ms. Whatley will travel to Washington, D.C. for National School Counselor of the Year award activities.

This School Counselor of the Year award honors professionals who devote their careers to advocating for the state’s and nation’s students and addressing their academic and social/emotional needs and college and career readiness skills.  

Counselors are nominated and voted on by their peers based on several criteria, including school counseling innovations, exemplary comprehensive school counseling programs, leadership and advocacy skills, and contributions to student advancement.

Five other PCSSD counselors have won Arkansas School Counselor Association Central Region Counselor of the Year awards in the past: Myrnell Manley, Gene Elms, Lois Craig, Jacque Briley, and Josie Noble McClain.
