When a second-grade student at Bates Elementary School brought a gun to school last week another brave young man named Thomas stepped in. As soon as he heard about the gun, he did the right thing and told an adult. The gun was immediately located and secured and the entire situation was handled safely and without incident.
In March we announced Lauren Motley, a student at Daisy Bates Elementary, was selected as the state-wide winner of the Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade Cabbage Program, after growing a four-foot wide, 16 pound cabbage. Her official recognition came yesterday, when she was honored at a schoolwide assembly in which P. Allen Smith, the award-winning designer, gardening and lifestyle expert, presented Lauren with her $1,000 scholarship award!
Lauren received the O.S. (oversized) Cross Cabbage Plant at her school last spring as part of the program. She took it home and planted it in a bathtub in her grandmother’s backyard, where over the summer it grew and grew and grew!
