Maumelle artist shines at exhibit

Haley McReynolds, a sophomore at MAUMELLE HIGH SCHOOL, has a drawing on exhibit at the Arkansas Learning Institute in the Butler Center at 401 Clinton Ave. in Little Rock. She represents the Central Region of the Arkansas Art Educators Association as first-place winner in 10th grade. Her work will be on exhibit until July 28, 2012. The gallery director advised the school that at the opening reception on Sunday May 13, since he mounted the exhibit a week earlier, there had been many positive comments from travelers from all over the United States about the quality of art education in the Natural State. Way to go Haley and Maumelle High!

Taylor’s Principal Smith awarded as patriot

TAYLOR ELEMENTARY Principal Jackie Smith was honored last Friday at the school in Jacksonville with a Patriot Award by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) in recognition of extraordinary support of her employee serving in the United States Navy Reserve.

Four foot cabbage nets $1,000 scholarship for Bates Elementary student

In March we announced Lauren Motley, a student at Daisy Bates Elementary, was selected as the state-wide winner of the Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade Cabbage Program, after growing a four-foot wide, 16 pound cabbage. Her official recognition came yesterday, when she was honored at a schoolwide assembly in which P. Allen Smith, the award-winning designer, gardening and lifestyle expert, presented Lauren with her $1,000 scholarship award!

Lauren received the O.S. (oversized) Cross Cabbage Plant at her school last spring as part of the program. She took it home and planted it in a bathtub in her grandmother’s backyard, where over the summer it grew and grew and grew!

Education Foundation of the National Restaurant Association recognizes North Pulaski teacher

Teresa Perkins, program coordinator of Simply Delicious Restaurant located at North Pulaski High School, has been selected as Arkansas’s Educator Excellence Award Winner for 2012 from the Education Foundation of the National Restaurant Association (NRAEF). The NRAEF sponsors ProStart, the restaurant management and culinary arts program students at NPHS participate and compete in. (They placed second this year in the Management Division and third in Culinary at the state competition.) Perkins will be honored at an awards ceremony during the National Restaurant Associations Annual Trade Show to be held in Chicago May 4 – 7.
