Martha “Coach” Cothren of JOE T. ROBINSON HIGH SCHOOL has received the Pi Beta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education at the University of Central Arkansas, Mentor Teacher Award for her work with student intern Austin Emerson. Cothren has 38 years of teaching experience, which she shared with Emerson. In his nomination of Cothren for the award, Emerson credited her for the time she spends preparing for her classes. For example, during her Warzone class (wars of the 20th century), she meets with veterans at the Veterans of Foreign Wars office (VFW).
Emerson said, “She has shown me how to analyze students formally through testing and writing papers and informally through asking questions and reading the students’ responses to the higher order thinking questions.”
Cothren will be invited to UCA’s College of Education’s pinning ceremenony in the spring. Congratulations Coach Cothren; PCSSD and ROBINSON HIGH are lucky to have you as a mentor to those aspiring to become quality teachers!
