Open Meetings to Include Board Rezoning Options And Public Input
The Pulaski County Special School District (PCSSD) has announced the dates of three public meetings scheduled per legislation to rezone the school district’s population as measured by the most recent (2010) United States Census, and to take any actions required by law regarding board zoning, according to Deborah Roush, the district’s executive director of communications. No later than June 8, 2012, every school district must submit a report to the Arkansas Department of Education documenting its compliance with this requirement, she said.
The open forum meetings will be Monday, May 21, 2012, at 6 p.m., at PCSSD’s Central Office, 925 East Dixon Road, in Little Rock; on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at 6 p.m., at Maumelle High School, 100 Victory Lane, in Maumelle; and on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at 6 p.m., at Jacksonville High School, 2400 Linda Lane, in Jacksonville.
Roush said if zone populations are no longer substantially equal, the district’s zones must be redrawn so the population differences between the zones do not exceed those allowed by the “one person-one vote” principle. That is, zones must be drawn so as to be substantially equal in voting age population.
Roush said the district will use the meetings to explain the requirements every school district must meet to reflect the results of the 2010 U.S. Census and what the possible new zones would look like and to seek public input.
