Maumelle Middle School FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) students brought home both silver and gold awards after competing in the STAR events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) held this week in Conway.
Alexis Crutchfield and Elizabeth Musick entered the Chapter Service Project in which they developed a project to collect hygiene products to make 50 “family packs” for the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Their entry won silver.
Abigail Herring competed in Career Investigation and scored gold – she also received the only perfect score in the state competition!
Haiden Fender and Maggie Culp entered the National Programs in Action-Community Service Project. They created a service project to collect donations to assist a three-year-old in our community who has been diagnosed with a vascular anomaly. She is scheduled to have surgery in New York and their project is raising money to help her with travel expenses. They were awarded gold.
Ashley Turner, Grace Krebs and Caroline Elliott competed in “Focus on Children.” They created lesson plans to help pre-k kids learn the sounds in the alphabet because kindergarten Common Core moves so quickly. Their team scored Gold.
Perryn Andrews entered “Recycle Redesign.” He recycled a computer and redesigned its parts into a do-it-yourself project. He scored Gold.
All nine of these MMS students, along with MMS FCCLA Advisor Kristin Herring, will now go on to complete at the National Leadership Conference to be held in Nashville, TN, in July.
Congratulations to each one and good luck at nationals!
