Two Baker teachers recognized for excellence in economics instruction

Congratulations to Nakesha Cunningham, kindergarten teacher at Baker Elementary School, for being named a 2016 Bessie B. Moore Award winner in the Veteran Category for excellence in economic teaching. Ms. Cunningham, along with 11 other state winners, was recognized at a luncheon at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center last week. The gala was hosted by Economics Arkansas, a non-profit educational organization that promotes economic and personal finance literacy among Arkansas K-12 students. She received $1,000 and an inscribed glass plaque for her successful classroom project titled, “A Hat is Here...A Hat is There...An Economic Hat is Everywhere.”

Also recognized at the luncheon was retired PCSSD Master Economics Teacher Deborah Shearer. Mrs. Shearer, who taught at Baker Elementary School, was recognized as a Lifetime Achievement Award winner. We congratulate her, as well!

The Bessie B. Moore Awards Program recognizes Arkansas teachers for going “above and beyond” what is required by developing outstanding economic and personal finance projects they integrate into the classroom during the school year. The recipients receive statewide recognition from board members and donors during an annual luncheon hosted each fall, plus a monetary award.
